Snyder Texas – Southern Hospitality at it’s Best
Nestled deep in the heart of West Texas!
Snyder is named for merchant and buffalo hunter William Henry (Pete) Snyder, who built a trading post on Deep Creek in 1878.
The post attracted fellow hunters and a small settlement grew around it.
With dwellings made mostly of buffalo hide and tree branches, the community’s first unofficial name was “Hide Town” and a statue of an albino buffalo at the county courthouse honors the town’s beginnings as a buffalo trading post.
Agriculture and cattle helped our town grow, and then the discovery of oil and gas turned Snyder into an energy boomtown that now includes large wind farms.
Travel and tourism are also a large part of Snyder’s economy.
Our tree-lined historic downtown has top-notch dining and boutique shopping options.
Snyder offers great recreation opportunities including two golf courses, four major parks, and Lake J.B. Thomas and Lake Alan Henry.
Discover the ‘Untamed History of West Texas’ at Snyder’s Scurry County Museum, or visit one of our many annual celebrations, festivals, and events including the West Texas Swing Festival in June.
We have four major family-friendly parks, a community theater, and lakes J.B. Thomas and Alan Henry, all making Snyder a great place to live or visit.
