Texas Hotel & Lodging Association is very excited to welcome to its staff Debbie Wieland as the THLA Educational Outreach & Foundation Director!

In this newly created position, Debbie will focus on increasing the number of Texas high schools and colleges that offer a Lodging and Resort Management program of study.

Part of this effort will include seeking Texas Education Agency approval of additional lodging-related certifications that make it more attractive for Texas high schools to offer a lodging management program within their school district. Increasing the number of Texas high schools and college lodging management programs will produce a larger pool of interested potential employee candidates for Texas hotels.

Debbie will also be working to enhance the public perceptions of lodging as a potential career path by providing more accurate salary compensation and career opportunity statistics to local, state, and federal agencies. These entities report this salary-related information to the Texas Education Agency, which in turn shares it with local school district administrators and counselors.

Additionally, Debbie will partner with the THLA Educational Foundation Committee to establish strategies on the above goals to ensure that each of these items is accomplished.

Prior to joining THLA, Debbie worked at the Texas Education Agency as the Assistant Director of Career and Technical Education and has an extensive background in education and the hospitality industry.

Debbie served as the Hospitality Educators Association of Texas President and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the organization. She was selected as a teacher of the year by the Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers Association of Texas and as a Hall of Fame honoree by the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

As a native Texan, Debbie was born and raised in San Antonio and brings with her a wealth of service-related experience and educational programming knowledge. Debbie earned her Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences from Southwest Texas State University (Texas State University) in San Marcos.
